How to Keep Your Air Conditioner Running Well Through the Fall

Your air conditioner has worked hard this summer and we still have more heat on its way. Just because the date on the calendar has moved over to fall doesn’t mean you’re done with your AC for the season. Staying up with annual AC maintenance, while also following a couple other pointers, can help you maintain your air conditioner while keeping your home comfy too.

Clean Around Your Outdoor Unit

Debris can pile up around your outside unit, especially during the fall. When the time comes to rake up the leaves in your yard, at least rake up the leaves and debris around your air conditioner. Debris can hinder air flow, causing your system to work harder and wear down quicker. We want your air conditioner to last as long as it was designed to.

Raise the Temperature on Your Thermostat

Set your thermostat at the highest temperature you can while still staying cozy. Whenever possible, use additional cooling methods such as fans. The lower you set your thermostat, the harder your system will have to work to attain that temperature. You may think shutting off your unit completely will save on energy and help your system, but that creates more work for it to make up when you turn it back on. It will have to work harder for a longer amount of time, which is another thing that could lead to premature system failure.
